DO NOT RETALIATE

Even when the street-dog,

in vile anger,

snaps at and seeks

to inflict a bite,

is there anyone

who would retaliate

in kind and hold

the canine by his teeth?

Likewise when the lowly,

devoid of grace

spew forth epithets

of vulgar abuse,

would those who are schooled

in nobility

allow the very same

language to emerge

from their own

decent mouths?
